Giving local students an insight into marketing careers
We recently welcomed Lauren Daniels, a Year 10 student from Newland School For Girls, in Hull, to Bluestorm, to undertake a work experience placement. Here’s what she got up to …
A career in marketing is something that interests me, which is why I wanted to do my Year 10 work experience placement at an agency, so I could see if the industry was for me.
When I arrived at Bluestorm on the Monday morning, I didn’t really know what to expect, but I was given a tour around the building. I was shown around all of the different departments and given an explanation about what they did.
During my week, I was given the opportunity to sit-in on some meetings to see what it was like to pitch to a client and sell the services Bluestorm offers. This helped me with a project I was given on how to tackle a new product launch.
I had to do some competitor and audience research, to see what products mine would be competing against and to determine whether I should aim my product specifically to one target audience or wider. Once I had all the information I needed, I made a sales pitch with some unique selling points.
I was given a few research tasks, including one which involved creating ideas for summer events for Bluestorm client Hornsea Freeport. I started by looking into successful events that have been held at shopping centres before and developed some new ideas. For another client, I researched vegetarianism and veganism, to see why it was becoming so popular and the impact it is having on the world. Once I had completed my research, I had to write an article on what I had found.
Throughout the week I was given different tasks to do, including copychecking literature, to see if there were any spelling mistakes or punctuation errors.
Overall, my short time at Bluestorm has shown me what it is like to be a part of a marketing company. The Bluestorm team has tested my skills and shown me how it all works within this industry. Everyone I met was welcoming and friendly, and it’s made me think I would like to pursue a career in marketing when I finish school.
