Keywords Template

View the spreadsheet formula from our presentation here. A member of the Bluestorm team will be in touch shortly with a downloadable version of the template for you.

How to set up your Search Console

1) Sign into Google Search Console: https://search.google.com/search-console

2) Select your property type by domain or URL prefixes:

Choose all to monitor all if you are using URL prefixes, but use your website URL as the main one to analyse.

3) Verify your ownership of the site with one of these methods.

4) Once verified, don't forget to submit your sitemap URL to crawl your website. You can find this in sitemaps in the left hand menu.

How to use the Bluestorm Search Console Analysis Template

1) Exporting your search term performance data

  • Log into your search console
  • Select your website from the dashboard
  • Navigate to the performance section in the left-hand menu
  • Click on the export button to download
  • Download your data as excel

2) Import your data into the template

  • Copy and paste your exported excel data into 'Core Keywords' tab

3) Set your branded terms

  • Within the 'brand names' tab populate your top 10 key brand terms by impressions
  • Cell A15 will show a list of brand names to use in formulas - please do not touch this

4) Generating your branded and unbranded lists

  • Once you have set your branded terms, this will automatically populate a branded list and an unbranded list separated into their tabs.
  • Review your search terms to get an understanding how your website is performing on Google search results pages.

5) Summarise your data

  • Your 'summary' tab will show comparisons of branded and unbranded activity for your website through clicks, impressions, clickthrough rates and average positioning

6) Optimising your website for unbranded search terms

  • Identify which relevant unbranded search terms you are gaining high impressions for but low number of clicks.
  • For each relevant unbranded keyword, categorise them into pages (into their separate columns under 'Unbranded keywords') you would like to optimise for by inputting Y
  • Place a filter on the column header and select to show 'Y" - this will show you all the search terms you would like to optimise for.
  • You have successfully reached the first step in keyword optimisation. Now you can use them with on-page SEO activities.

BONUS - struggling to identify which page to place a keyword you want? You can create new content with the keyword in mind either through landing pages, blog posts, news or articles.
